Could emails become the snail mail for ecommerce users?
Email could become unnecessary for ecommerce users
We all thought the typewriter was passé when the keyboard came along. This may be true, but the keyboard is but an extension of the typewriter. And then, with the advent of the email, snail mail lost its way, although it is not history yet. Now, ecommerce could send email into oblivion! At least for users, that is.
Developments make use of emails redundant
Today, ecommerce is all about usability. An ecommerce offers products in a way that enriches user experience. It offers aesthetics in its design elements. It also offers the viewer lots of options. A potential customer could view dozens of brands of the product she wants to purchase. These dozen brands are presented in several illustrative ways. All that the visitor needs to do is select the brand with all its exact specifications. Once this is done, the order is placed, and the payment is made. So, where is the need for emails in all this? The mouse does all the work needed for the ecommerce website user. When developments like this happen, one is inclined to think if emails are going to go the way all its predecessors did. When the ecommerce user has no need for a faculty, who would invent the need for it? Isn't the aim of technology to reduce work and make life easier?
Wait, not yet!
However, it is a little premature to say if the ecommerce business is going to phase emails out. In a sense, it never can, because as we have seen, even if it becomes totally obsolete, it will be only for users. The business itself can never do without emails. Without them, how is it going to communicate with its customers, its bread earners? The possibility of ecommerce taking emails out of the way does not seem likely to happen. At best, it could spell desuetude for emails, but only from users. This transformation will be somewhat similar to what is happening to papers today with the advent of emails. Despite widespread computerisation, paper has still not disappeared from the scene. This is expected to be the situation with emails.

What is social media marketing?
Reaching out to millions through the Net
In simple terms –and this is a rather simple term –social media marketing implies the use of the social media to market. However, there is a catch because social media is a broad term. It can mean anything from sites like Twitter, which offer the user limited space to Facebook, on which the user can upload anything from two-line notes to family photos. This is what makes social media marketing challenging.
So, what is social media marketing, if it is not just an extension of several existing media of marketing? Is it only an online version of what salesmen have been doing for ages? In a sense, yes, because this is an altogether new medium that did not exist till the advent of the Internet. Yet, this very form lends it a kind of uniqueness. Using the Net to market is an old strategy; using the social media specifically is a new one.
Gigantic opportunity
Social media marketing, as we have seen, is using the social media to market products and services. Here is where the field presents a humungous opportunity for marketers. Who could have imagined laying hands on a seamless, geography and age-neutral marketplace a few years ago? The most striking opportunity social media marketing offers is that it enables the members of the community to interact with each other. A user in Turkey could talk about her favourite brand of T-shirt to a fellow member in say, Tanzania. What better publicity can a business hope for?
Challenges
While this global exposure is the best aspect of social media marketing, its strength also presents its greatest challenge. A social networking site is what it is –a place where people meet up to discuss several matters. Why should a product be part of it? Getting a social media member to talk about a product, and more specifically, a brand is a great challenge for marketers. Once they can get a social networking site member to do it, it is certain business for them. Getting the member to that point is where the difficulty is.
Secondly, advertising on the social media is undoubtedly a great opportunity, but making it effective and catchy is another challenge. This is because members are ordinary people from all walks of life. Grabbing their attention is about as difficult as getting television viewers to do it. Advertising needs to be smart, focused and catchy.
A medium that is here to stay
Despite the challenges, social media marketing is a medium that is here to stay. About the only change one can expect is the networking site itself, whose popularity may keep shifting. Today, the world’s most popular social networking site is Facebook, and marketers are scrambling for it. If this position changes, the idea of social media marketing is not going to change; only the site could.
Woman power in ecommerce
The fairer sex could be an important component of the ecommerce space
Is this site going to be yet another platform for gender issues? Well, it depends on how you see it. Even a hardboiled MCP would have to concede that women are an important aspect of the ecommerce industry. Let us see how.
A huge market waiting to be tapped
Conceding for the corny fact that half the world’s population consists of women; this is the segment to be tapped. Women, as all husbands would know, are finicky when it comes to their shopping tastes. They are difficult customers to please; yet, it is the same gender that can spread word about a product like no one else. Imagine if a woman is completely satisfied with a cosmetic product; the first thing she is going to do is bring the topic up with her friends. When the product is easily available on the Net, a business can rest assured that it has a market on its hands.
Greater users of online shopping
When a chunk of the market is well-informed, choosy and fussy, that presents a challenge no business can afford to ignore. Recent research has shown that females use virtual means to shop more than men. This is perhaps because of the fact that women’s products are more easily accessible on the Net. To give a simple example, it is much easier to find an ornament or a lipstick on an ecommerce website than a Beemer or a piece of real estate. It is this fact that has forced businesses to add more and more innovation into their products to enable ease of use by women.
Drivers of innovation
Most technological changes that have taken place in the graphic user interface, such as touchscreen technology, are rooted in women’s ease of using these features. The next emerging wave in user experience, Augmented Reality, is almost entirely women-driven. What this technology does is to allow the user to get a virtual feel of the product by enabling her to be pictured using the product live. It is the virtual equivalent of the trial room, except that the user does not have to physically put the product on. If a woman wants to know what she looks like in a certain design of clothing, she only needs to select the particular product, and what she gets is a real time image of herself in the selected clothing.
Women and ecommerce thus share a special relationship. Ecommerce businesses need to dig deeper into this to ensure great ROI.
